History of The Salvation Army in Syracuse
On a chilly March afternoon in 1883, a small crowd at the steps of the original Onondaga County Courthouse saw Courthousesomething remarkable. Four young volunteers armed only with hymns and tambourines, proclaimed God’s love. It was the first known Salvation Army activity in Upstate New York, and among the earliest Salvation Army efforts in the United States.

In 1898, the “Workmen’s Hotel” was opened and a certificate of incorporation was granted by the State of New York the following year. By the turn of the century, The Salvation Army was well established in Syracuse, providing food and housing to those in need.

The Salvation Army has grown over the past 126 years to serve 30,000 people every year. We offer 40 programs and operate in 13 different locations in Onondaga County. Each year, more than 2,000 volunteers give over 20,000 hours of their time in support of our work. These programs range from our food pantry, shelter for the homeless, licensed quality day care for low income families, outreach and counseling for homelessFacade of the 749 South Warren Street building youth, housing, parenting and life skills training for teen mothers, senior services and food and gifts for disadvantaged families during the holidays.

The Salvation Army of the Syracuse Area provides much more than a hot meal and a place to sleep. Our programs are designed to encourage growth and self-sufficiency in the men, women and children we serve. Right here in the greater Syracuse community, people’s lives are being changed through this unique blend of expertise and compassion.
