Individual Volunteer Opportunities
Because of the breadth and scope of our programs, we have volunteer opportunities seven days a week throughout the year.  Below are descriptions of just some of our volunteer opportunities. For more information, please complete our Volunteer Interest Form.  Once we receive this information, we will contact you to discuss volunteer opportunities specific to your interests and availability.

The After School Program is a licensed quality day care center for children 5 – 12 years old that provides after school supervision and activities.  Volunteers must be over the age of 16 and willing to work with children doing their homework, assist with mobile computer lab, doing arts and crafts as well as small and gross motor activities.  The After School Program is open Monday through Friday from 2:00pm – 5:30pm and from 7:30am – 5:30pm during school holidays, breaks, snow emergency days and all summer.

The Salvation Army is the largest, licensed not for profit Day Care provider in Onondaga County with 4 day care facilities.  Day Care volunteers must be over the age of 16 to assist with diapering and/or toileting, feeding and lead recreation activities for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years.  Our 4 day care centers are open from 7:00am—5:30pm Monday through Friday.

The Adult Day Center provides opportunities for socialization and wellness that support independence for our community’s seniors. Nutritionally balanced breakfasts and hot lunches are served to all participants.  Volunteers help serve meals to the elderly, offer companionship and assist in recreational activities.  The Adult Day Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:00am – 2:00pm.

Our Emergency and Practical Assistance Services (Food Pantry) provides help for those seeking food, shelter and other basic needs.  It is the initial point of access where further assessment is done to help identify other issues that may require services that provide long-term solutions.  Volunteers will help staff sort, stock, package and distribute groceries to needy families.  The Food Pantry is open Monday – Friday from 9:00am – 4:30pm.  Extra help is needed during the second half of each month.

The PRISM Program works with youth who are on probation and in need of a positive role model in their life, to support them with education, recreation and making positive choices.  The hours are flexible.  Volunteers must be 21 years old and commit to meeting for at least one hour a month for a year.

The Adolescent Pregnancy Case Management Program provides case management and outreach to youth under the age of 21 who are parenting, pregnant or at risk.  Because the case managers work out of the office most of the time, a volunteer is needed for 4 hours a month for office tasks.  Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30am – 5:00pm.

The Emergency Shelter is a 30-bed, co-ed shelter and counseling service for homeless women and families.  It provides meals, casework services and help finding a stable income and living situation.  Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday from 4pm to 6pm to assist in serving dinner.  Volunteers must be over the age of 18 or over 14 if accompanied by their parent or guardian.  Additionally, volunteers are needed during the weekend hours to assist with recreational activities and preparing meals.
